News spreads like margarine in Cape Town. Overnight, a pod of whales (awaiting exact info) beached on Cape Town’s Southern West Coast. Pictures were taken across the length of Long Beach, Kommetjie. There were 20-ish whales on the low tide sand this afternoon, all alive, but not very happy.
The human effort was amazing. People across Cape Town zipped up their neoprene and assigned themselves to one of the many beautiful beached creatures, spending hours cooling and comforting them and praying for high tide to hurry up.
Unfortunately (my personal assumption) the efforts were in vain – the ones that were assisted back into the sea had no intention of going anywhere but back onto the beach.
Well done to anyone who completed or attempted to ride the Argus this year. There is not a chance that I would have pitched up this morning! – but I guess most people think its crazy to surf in the middle of a freezing winter storm. Different strokes…
